Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk trailer features Billie Joe Armstrong, Kirk Hammett, Tim Armstrong, and Iggy Pop — watch

Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk

Is a new full-length documentary covering over 30 years of history of the California Bay Area’s punk scene, with a focus on the emergence of Berkeley’s 924 Gilman Street music collective. The Godfather of Punk himself, Iggy Pop, narrates the film.

The documentary was directed and produced by Corbett Redford, with Green Day serving as executive producers. It will have its world premiere on the opening night of the 16th San Francisco Documentary Film Festival on May 31st.

Subsequently, there will be screenings in tandem with the US leg of Green Day’s Revolution Radio World Tour. There will also be a theatrical campaign launching in New York City in late July, followed by a run in Los Angeles in mid-September. In anticipation, a full trailer has been unveiled.

Green Day and Rancid’s success is just part of the story — the roots of East Bay punk rock go deep. Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk premieres May 31 at the San Francisco Doc Fest (SF IndieFest). http://bit.ly/2rSC1Wu

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Noodles of The Offspring, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys, Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill, The Julie Ruin), and Tim Armstrong (Operation Ivy, Rancid) all make appearances in the jam-packed trailer.

Spliced between their fond memories of the scene are images of the type of mayhem that went on at 924 Gilman Street, from confetti parties to tricycle races. Watch the full thing above.

“Turn It Around gave us the opportunity to tell the story of the East Bay punk rock scene, a scene that’s a sacred thing to me, Mike and Tré and to a lot of others who were there at the founding and who helped to shape the genre,” Billie Joe Armstrong shared via press release.

“We’re proud to bring the history of this movement to the world and hope the film inspires people to create their own music and to build an artistic community.”

You can see a full list of upcoming screenings at the film’s website.

French Blood (original title: Un Français)

A new French movie is causing ructions over claims that it is too incendiary for general release. The film is about a violent skinhead and the origins of France's far-right political movement.

Marco is a skinhead, a real one. With his friends, Braguette, Grand-Guy, Marvin, he hits the Arabs and glue the posters of the far right. Until he feels that, despite himself, his hatred is abandoning him. But how to get rid of violence, anger, stupidity that has in oneself? This is the journey of a bastard who will try to become a good person.

AGNOSTIC FRONT | The American Dream Died - 2015

Roger Miret and Vinnie Stigma keep AGNOSTIC FRONT's hardcore train rolling full-steam into its third decade, notwithstanding the band's brief hiatus during the mid-Nineties. Though both men have since ceased performing in MADBALL, Miret's half-brother (and MADBALL vocalist) Freddy Cricien remains allied as producer of AGNOSTIC FRONT's seething eleventh album, "The American Dream Died". Cricien also appears in a cameo alongside H20's Toby Morse and SICK OF IT ALL's Lou Koller on "Never Walk Alone". Plus there's a collaboration with former AGNOSTIC FRONT and MADBALL guitarist Matt Henderson on "A Wise Man".
Miret and Stigma are fortified by Mike Gallo (bass), Pokey Mo (drums) and Craig Silverman now in place of departing guitarist Joseph James as AGNOSTIC FRONT begins its campaign in support of the sixteen song "The American Dream Died". The track count shouldn't be too intimidating since AGNOSTIC FRONT plays "The American Dream Died" like a vintage hardcore album, mostly fast in speed and in time. "Enough is Enough", "Reasonable Doubt", "I Can't Relate", "Attack!" and "No War Fuck You" are prime examples.
While a good handful of the songs on "The American Dream Died" delve the tried and true hardcore unification ethos (i.e. "Test of Time", "We Walk the Line", "Never Walk Alone", "Attack!" and "Just Like Yesterday"), expect the equally reliable incendiary tirades against war, the authorities, despotic government, exploitive business and street scum.
"Police Violence" is sure to raise a stink with its horde bellowing of "FTP!" (as in "fuck the police"). The track is reminiscent of old MDC (which changed its acronym connotation numerous times but will always be remembered by hardcore vets as MILLIONS OF DEAD COPS) with its searing pace and hostile backlash in response to recent headlines of American police brutality. "Only in America" and "Test of Time" are equally fast, stuffed with Roger Miret's bellicose squelching, powerful riffs and of course, plenty of gang shouted-choruses.
If it's gang shouts and sing-alongs you're after, "Never Walk Alone" will be your jam. Or perhaps "Old New York", which opens with a quip from "Taxi Driver" and stomps giddily along to the choruses of "The greatest city of them all, but it just don't feel the same, I miss the old New York!" "We Walk the Line"'s menacing chords and marching rhythms are just as infectious as its choruses. Then the reflective ending track "Just Like Yesterday" will have hardcore lions of all ages raging "Death before dishonor!" in tandem with the band.
Roger Miret spitefully snarls "You got what you deserved!" against a child rapist served a citizens' knife party amidst "Social Justice"'s steaming speed. For longtime AGNOSTIC FRONT fans, this album is going to feel like the days of "Victim in Pain", "Cause for Alarm" and the "United Blood" EP with a modern veneer. Miret and company have engineered another blistering, attention-seizing album with nearly as much venom as BLACK FLAG's "My War", still today the angriest song ever laid down by anybody. AGNOSTIC FRONT's acrimonious crusade may ring of the same themes they started out with, but that's sadly testament to the persistent issues they continue to protest. At least they still care. A great deal.
For you vinyl hounds, AGNOSTIC FRONT will be offering a download code inside "The American Dream Died"

THE EXPLOITED To Release New Studio Album Next Summer

THE EXPLOITED To Release New Studio Album Next Summer
British punk legends THE EXPLOITED are working on a new studio album for a summer 2015 release via Nuclear Blast. It will mark the band's first CD since singer Wattie Buchan suffered a heart attack on stage during THE EXPLOITED's concert on February 13 in Lisbon, Portugal during the "Tour Of Chaos" with HATEBREED and NAPALM DEATH.
Comments THE EXPLOITED: "It was very important for us that Wattie cures completely. Now he's recovered and we can go on working with new power.
"We're totally hooked to enter the studio to record new songs, and, of course, we're thrilled to play the upcoming live shows.
"Watch out / get ready, THE EXPLOITED is back — better than ever!"

Founded in 1980 in Edinburgh by Wattie Buchan, THE EXPLOITED's last studio album, "Fuck The System", came out in 2003.

Close Shave-Bad Reputation

December saw the release of Close Shave's second album outing since they got back together. Having done artwork for the first CD, I was asked to design the 2nd one. It appeared some of the tracks had already seen an outing on the first CD so I wasn't expecting anything any different than what had already been released. How wrong I was to be. I had heard good reports about it prior to listening to it. The quality compared to the previous album really shines through. Even tracks like My Brother Mark, The Real Oi!, Won't Say Sorry and Can't Stand Northern Soul have been improved upon no end. I found myself liking them a lot more this time around. The sound is of a quality on a par with Oi! classics of the golden years by The Rejects, Sparrer, 4-Skins, Business and the Last Resort. I swear I can even hear some Ramones and some Upstarts in there somewhere.
The songs that stand out on the album are Who Made You the Voice of the National Conscience, A Sapper's Tale, The title track - Bad Reputation and the rework of You're Wondering Now. It does actually work well yet still true enough to the original. I don't know what has happened between the two albums but I should imagine a lot of hard work and a lot of thought about the songwriting. There are some memorable riffs, some great bass-line breaks and a lot of great guitar soloing that make this album deserved of the title of "Best Oi! album in years". If you have Made in Brum and were in any doubt about getting the follow-up CD - don't hesitate. Their critics would like nothing more than to see them fail but based on this CD, they have proved themself to be producing the best streetpunk in the UK bar none. You wil  NOT be disappointed. I give it at least 9/10.
